The Casa Mariposa is looking for an outgoing, energetic and responsible couple or individual for the position of Seasonal Lead Host. This position is eligible for a stipend and other incentives. Duration of position December 1 through April 31 (6 months) Casa Mariposa is the base for many active international travelers who have come to our remote village in order to hike in some of Costa Rica's most beautiful high elevation forest, and to climb to the highest peak between Guatemala and Columbia.
We are a Family style guesthouse with a common kitchen for guest use. We can house up to 22 guests and are often full during the high season from Dec 1 to April 31.

Our hostel is is located in a small village and the outlying area is home to approximately 1000 residents, many of whom practice agriculture. Life begins here at dawn for both agriculturists and hikers alike, and to find locals out of bed after 8 pm is very uncommon. The businesses in town, in fact, except for the bar, close after 7:30 pm.

Beside Chirripo National Park, there are many other things that attract travelers to San Gerardo. Cloudbrige Reserve is a word class nature reserve full of great trails and many impressive water falls. There are also local artisans, a hot springs, trout fishing and botanical gardens in our little valley. The area is a birder's dream with well over 300 species found locally.

Though the village may be slow moving, life at the hostel is quite active and we have a lot of very interesting people constantly coming and going. We value nature and the tranquility of this extraordinary mountain village and we actively promote a peaceful attitude and ethic among our guests.
We highly value sharing and interaction and try to give the guests access to the real Costa Rican culture by connecting them with local artisans and businesses.

The Lead Host position duties include:
Oversight, direction and participation in the work exchange team
At least one Lead Host will be on shift in the afternoon, but as a Lead Hosts, you will be responsible for the successful operation of the hostel for all shifts so active involvement at other hours may sometimes be required. The morning shift is occupied by another work exchange team member. Local paid staff will be in charge of many basic operations such as scheduled cleaning and house turnover tasks.
Hours of operation at the Casa Mariposa are between 6:30 am and 9:00 pm. A successful Lead Host team will be able to plan and direct well so as free up time for breaks for themselves and the other team members.

House hosting for the evening shift.

The evening position involves a high level of guest interaction, assisting with preparations for the Chirripo hike, orienting guests to the area etc. The Lead Host team will manage reservations and inquiries by email and phone and a proficiency in Spanish and English is required. Settling guest accounts, Laundry and light cleaning, as well as help in out of doors projects du jour are also part of the position.
In addition our helpers take part in any special projects we have in the works in a local Spanish language exchange, working alongside local Spanish speakers.

Light maintence

Light bulbs will need to be changed and toilets may need to be unclogged. The power may go out when everyone is without their flashlights. A successful Lead host Team will be resourceful and capable of dealing with those unexpected everyday occurrences of running a guesthouse. Though you will have the backup of the owners at most times, there will be times when you are the only ones in charge. Familiarity with tools is a must.

Skills and Qualifications
Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Spanish. A helpful and friendly disposition. Empathy. Cleanly habits. Ability to self resource and find solutions. Ability to envision the larger picture in any situation.
Must be physically fit.
We are situated in a area of steep terrain. Most transportation in the local area is by foot. Any given walk is likely to cover an elevation gain or loss of 300 meters and a round trip of at least 3 kilometers (the distance to the nearest store). Hikes in the area are from moderate to quite difficult and as a Host, you will be expected to be familiar with the area in order to be a source of good information for the guests.
Handling money and accurate settling of accounts. House hosting skills, general cleaning, gardening, pet care
Construction skills, stone and cement work, welding skills all a plus
